TRAUMA & MEMORY – “Will I Be Believed?”

When you’ve experienced any kind of trauma it can be hard to talk about. This is especially true of sexual trauma. The victim feels shock, shame, fear of being judged and fear of not being believed.

Why? Often because the traumatic memories of what occurred are held in the brain in a disorganized and non-linear fashion.

In the past, victims of sexual assault were often disbelieved by law enforcement officials because their stories were fragmented into images, flashes and broken pieces; often without a coherent linear narrative. Science now shows us that this is exactly how the brain will experience and hold on to the trauma.

“In fact, we now know that if someone can give you a clear-cut linear report, it’s unusual.”

Times are changing. Law enforcement officers are getting trauma informed training that is based on modern science, which is transforming the way they deal with survivors.

Veteran officers are admitting to having made a lot of mistakes in the past and are eager to right those wrongs by believing victims who come forward…
